Nine Leafer's Hydro Jack Herer/Pineapple Romulan/God's Gift Grow Journal - 2010

So, I stumbled across SettingSun's LED vs HID grow journal (WOW!) and he gave me the inspiration to give this a go. It is my first indoor-hydro grow. I have down outdoor/soil in the past with success. As we all know the difficulties you face are different but similar with both situations. Having a decent idea of what it takes, I'm going for it!

Strains: Jack Herer x 1 - Pineapple Romulan x 1 - God's Gift x 2
Veg or Flower: Veg for 7 days now
Medium: Coco Coir 75% x Perlite 25%
Bucket Size: 2gallon x 2 and 3gallon x 2
Light: 400w HID
Temp: 82-88 depending on how warm my house is :p
Humidity: 55-58%
PH: 5.5-6.1
Watering: Once a day right now
Nutrients: Dynamite Select Purple Bottle CRF's and 3-part Flora from General Hydro

I put just under the recommended dosing for the CRF's. Didn't want the warm temps to melt them too quickly and burn the roots. So far so good.
I have only used the FloraMicro and FloraGrow the last two days, but in a very small dose. 1/8tsp FloraGrow and 1/4tsp FloraMirco to 1/2gallon of tap water.

I am posting pictures of the first day under the 400w HID, immediately after transplanting I took the pictures. Also, I am posting the pictures I took today, which is a total of 7 days under the lighting.

Nice choice on the strains and the plants are looking great as well as the environment that i can tell from the photos :grinjoint:

Ill be watchn

Thanks so much for stopping by my thread, glad to have you aboard. I'm already in the love with the Jack Herer and she isn't even flowering yet! :thumb:

I am doing a weekly update, today is day 14 of the Veg stage. I purchased some Subculture-M from General Hydroponics to promote robust root growth and nutrient intake. It has 33% Kelp Meal, 39% Humic Acid and 27.9% Inert Ingredients (about 30 different ingredients make the 27.9% inert). Endo and Ecto Mycorrhizal fungi that colonize plant roots. Seems to be an awesome additive, or so I hear, so I'll give it a go. It says to add before potting, but I'm sure I can "top-dress" and water so it gets down to the roots just fine. I also purchsed Diamond Black by General Hydroponics which is suposed to work hand-inhand with the Subculture-M. If anyone has any info/experience with these products please relay what you know.

2 days ago I started LST on two plants, Godz #2 and Pineapple Romulan, but only pulled them slightly since I have loose Coco and very stiff "trunks". They don't bend much. I love the way the Jack Herer is growing, spreading out nicely, almost as if I LST'ed it. I will be going into the flowering stage within the next few days. Waiting to get a bit more growth on the shortest of the plants before I make the "switch". I also need to install the 2x400w HPS I will be using for the flowering stage. I just picked up the LumeWing Reflectors and their hangers. I haven't added any Flora-nutrients for the last 5 days or so. I had some slight leaf curl upward, which I thought was from nute burn so I flushed them and everything seems to be fine.

Thanks for stopping by my Grow Journal!

Just a few shots from the top I snapped last night. Surprised how well a few turned out being that I'm using my cell phone for these pictures. Also added a shot of the Ballast I'm using for the Veg stage, I picked it up used at a local Aquarium Shop for $80. I saw dual 400w and nearly shat myself. I don't know much about that particular lighting company, but it seems to perform very well. I am only using one of the ballasts for this grow. It fires any mogul base bulb I put in it MH or HPS, although it is designed for Dual-End "European" HQI bulbs. Silent ballast and no bulb buzz with the Sylvania Metalarc 400w BT/28 Mogul Base bulb I am using currently.

I have two HPS only ballasts that I've had laying around so I wired my new reflectors to them last night. I just feel more comfortable using a HPS only (S51 type) ballast for the Flowering stage. Can't wait to start flowering. Buzzzzzzzz! (*S51 sound effects*) Anyway, on to the pictures.

Ballast I use for Veg Stage
1128100019-011.jpg

Ok, today is the end of the 3rd week(Day 21) of Veg stage. I didn't want to go 3 weeks but they weren't in a condition I felt comfortable flowering yet. Now, I have pulled out the MH bulb and ballast and replaced it with the two HPS ballasts. I can't wait any longer to flower!!! Here are a few pictures I shot of the plants today before switching them to HPS. They are now on 12hr/12hr cycle, and I left both HPS running for one hour before the timer turned them off. I am using 5am-[On] 5pm-[Off]. Let the stretch begin!
I can't believe the Jack Herer without LST. I bet this strain goes nuts if you LST it. I'll have to find out on the next grow as I hope to clone it after I revert back to Veg. Well, that's the plan for now anyway.

Day 28 (7 Days of Flowering)

The stretch is on, as they might say. Today is the 7th day since I had switched over to 12hr lighting. I love the way these girls react to the changes. I began to notice them emitting a smell on the second day which was very surprising considering they had little to no fragrance prior to the change in lighting. I took many pictures trying to get decent shots since my cellphone and the HPS lighting really affects the outcome of the pictures. The built-in camera has an auto light sensor and adjusts contrast/hues accordingly, weather you like it or not, on top of the HPS putting of the "beautiful" orange colors. I tried my best to correct some of the colors issues and uploaded both versions. Anyway, I did manage to get in the "right spot" to grab a couple up-close shot of what appears to be her offerings just underway. I will be posting more shot tomorrow as I was only able to snap a few about an hour before the lights went out today. :bong:

Looks good man! I'll be stopping by here to see how your grow is going.

Thanks! It's going very good so far. I like what I am seeing for the first week. These strains are longer to flower, about 75-80 days. So it should be fun in the coming weeks to watch things unfurl! :slide:

Nice looking grow, 9 Leafer :thumb:

How high above the canopy do you have your light? And, what do you drain the hempys into?

Reps for that clean set up!

Horse, thanks for the great comments and Reps, greatly appreciated!

I have had the light at 18" above the plants since I started this grow. From planting the clones til today. I was just too worried about "premature" stretching and big gaps between nodes. I noticed some heat stress on the leaves but I don't think it was enough to worry about since they were putting on literally several leaves per day. I had them at 24/0 for 3 weeks straight then right over to 12/12. I think I may try 20/4 next cycle, any opinions on those time diffrences in the early stages of growth?Ddo the 4 hours of dark, in your opinion, add any benefit to the Veg cycle? What is your opinion on light height in the Veg/Flower stage?

For the runoff I use a 30"x14"x8" "Rubbermaid" style tub that fits two plants at a time, sort of a pain in the ass with the small space and only being able to do two plants at a time. They will be getting too large very soon to do this so I am thinking of other ways to drain and remove the runoff. Need to come up with an easier solution, but this is working for now. It a Drain-to-Waste setup.

I've been giving them nothing but R/O water with CaMg+ 10ml per gallon and Diamond Black(Humic Acid) 10ml per gallon for the last 2 weeks. They seem to be loving it. I was using tap water but since I get R/O for my saltwater tank already, I figured what the hell, might as well. And I don't have to wait for the all the chloramines in the tap water to evaporate. Overall easier.

Glad to have someone asking questions, thanks Horse! :passitleft:

I've been vegging 20/4 for a while, seems to work well. The plants get a rest, then back to work :grinjoint:

I use coco, so sometimes it takes a while for the bucket to pee... and dribblers can get messy...
I picked up some clear storage tubs that I use for liners. When the runoff gets up near the hole, I suck it into a 5 gal bucket thru a little fluid transfer pump w/ a router speed controller. A wet/dry shop works, too.

Looks like you've got it going... :goodjob:

Weekly Update - Week 5 (Day 14 Flower)

The girls are starting to pop out little "popcorn" nugs EVERYWHERE! Today I am going to start using Liquid KoolBloom. Total I am using 5ml CaMg+, 7.5ml Flora Bloom, 5ml Flora Micro, 5ml Diamond Black and 5ml of the KoolBloom per gallon of R/O water. The amount of height these girls have put on is amazing. I took random shots of buds and group shots. Not enough room to get individual shots of each girl. They sure are a sexy bunch.

I have been raising the reflectors everyday to keep up with their growth. The shortest(Godz #1) of the girls has finally begun to stretch out these last few days. I was worried about her not getting as much "stretch" as the others, but she's short and gorgeous. It is interesting to see the differences in Godz #1 and Godz #2. They are clones from the same mother, with very different growth. It will be nice to see how these two pack on the weight.

The Jack Herer is a beast! She doesn't care if she wasn't "LST'ed", she is spreading like crazy and putting on many "bud sites". She has a ton of "tops". I would really like to LST a Jack Herer in the future. They seem like they would be a perfect match for low stress training. I chose not to, when I LST'ed the others, because she looked so "chunky" already.

Pineapple Romulan is doing her thing and is very thick foliage with a few long branches sticking out of the top. Just reaching for the light!

Until next week! Here are the pictures in no particular order, sorry if you have dial-up.

Weekly Update - Week 6 (Day 22 Flower)

Hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! I had a great time with my family and great food!

Today is Day 22 of Flower and they are progressing nicely. Slowly filling the gaps between each node on the upper bud sites with a very dank-musty smell emanating from them. Watering schedule is still every other day, and nutes are being applied at the same interval as before with no "just water" days. They are not showing signs of nute burn, so it seems to be just fine to not have a "just water" day in between nute days. I don't hit them hard with nutes so its probably at a balance, instead of hard nutes with a pure water flush day in between. I do pour a gallon of R/O and 5mg CaMg+ about every 7 days. Just to be sure the salts don't begin to build too much. Other then that they are still stretching a bit, but I am not having to raise my lighting as often. I'll probably raise the front light once more then Ill be good for the rest of the flowering stage. I don't think they should stretch much after this week, but we shall see! :slide:
