can you get medical marijuana for sciatic nerve? a friend of mine has a pinched sciatic nerve in his leg and wont listen to me about geting MMJ, if he were to see a doctor could he get it? it bothers him all the time and even prevents him from sleeping. what should he do?

YEs but depends on which state, also he must have several years of medical records from other docs when he applies stating the cause of sciatica, when and how long, i.E., herniated disc, prolapse, radiculapathy, and tears in the disc ,all of which put disc material on the sciatic nerve which can cause nerve damage. seen with MRI, IF the pain has not subsided with normal remedies, stretches,physical therapy,shots, etc. he may be qualified.
But just walking in saying you have a pain in your ass or leg (no pun), perhaps may not work.

I have had severe , chronic sciatica for 6 years now, I was ruined. I stepped outa the shower and bam! ruptured my L5 S1- disc, from then on I have suffered the worse pain and twisted spine , I have never known the pain that sciatica and lower back pain gave me. I lost work, couldnt ski, bike or do yoga. I went to the doc for 6 years without a cure, have been pain meds and mmj for awhile. I got mmj after 4 years of severe sciatica and pain meds. I had a huge log of doc visits though . applied for disability.. anyways sorry to make this such a long reply,I do know all about sciatica unfortunetaly is one thing that has taken over my life. thanks l8tnightskunk! It's a terrible condition for sure, but very true, I did not get my disability either, after 6 years of medical records stating #10 pain daily and being incapacitated with it. Pain is a disease that can be treated,maybe not cured, just have to find the right treatment. in the meantime I still have to climb 40 ft ladders on meds risk my life to paint houses. Anyway, one can get a mmj card for sciatica, just have to show what created the condition .

If he is prescribed Ox***ntin or any other time-released op***d, this should qualify him as a chronic moderate-severe pain patient. Most states have severe chronic pain as one of the ailments covered. California's Prop 215 wording is much broader, and because of this, has been more abused than in other states, but gives you nearly any reason that affects your quality of life as a legitimate reason to get a MMJ recommendation.

I did a search for Oregon's MMJ law, and here is what they say for qualifying patients with a debilitating condition:

a. Cancer, glaucoma, agitation due to Alzheimer's disease, positive status for HIV or acquired IDS, or treatment for these conditions
b. A medical condition or treatment for a medical condition that produces, for a specific patient, one ore more of the following:
(A) Cachexia
(B) Severe pain
(C) Severe nausea
(D) Seizures, including, but not limited to seizures caused by epilepsy; or
(E) Persistent muscle spasms, including but not limited to spasms caused by multiple sclerosis; or
c. Any other medical condition or treatment for a medical condition adopted by the department by rule or approved by the department pursuant to a petition submitted pursuant to ORS 475.334.

So, your friend may fall under b.(B)

Oregon's laws are not as all encompassing as California's.

I'm about to contact a Dr to try it out. I've not used med mar for this. I had it originally about 5 years ago and the only thing that helped was Feldenkries(Sp?), i tried drugs, accupuncture, chiropractor, phys therapy, before Feld..

The sciatica flares up on occasion if I've been sitting too long. but sometimes I have to.

my sister inlaw lives in toronto and she got her MMAR for a pinched sciatic nerve, so yes I believe its a valid reason and I hope this helps.

you may have to proove that you have the sciatica and that the pain meds don't work without the mmj. My justification is cannabis helps me take LESS pain meds, but I still have to take em. My MRI shows the herniation. If you have this and a list of conservative therapies you have tried then you are quailified. The same exact thing i went thru.

Needs to see another doctor - perhaps neurologist or pain intervention specialists - everyone's a frickkin specialist....but my general practitioner has helped me build a good case for scitica pain, and 'intractable pain' is one of the 'standard' accepted medical applications of cannabis - mmj will help lessen but rarely provide full relief but after yrs and yrs any degree of relief is a blessing.....
