New Cannabis-like Drugs Could Block Pain Without Affecting Brain, Says Study

this study basically says that there is a way to activate cannabinoid receptors in the peripheral nervous system (the sensory nerves), and not the brain. So basically you would get the pain relief experienced from smoking marijuana, but not the high.

personally I welcome a development of such a drug, because if it is just as effective as medical marijuana, then it will help many people who cannot receive it due to the current illegality in at least half the U.S.

Also, the debate of legalization will then be solely regarding recreational use. One of the most cited reasons against legalization of medical marijuana is that people are really just using it recreationally. Accusations of people faking symptoms to get their hands on medical marijuana would not be an issue anymore. And the real issue would be at hand, which in my opinion, is that marijuana is just as safe as alcohol. I would rather smoke marijuana illegally than go to a clinic to relieve 'pain' that I have.
