'Cannabis Helped Our 13 Year old Son Beat Cancer'

It is not often you hear parents celebrating the effect cannabis has had on their teenage son.

But for Angela and Paul Ryder, the drug has been life-changing for their cancer-stricken child Chico.

The 13-year-old took cannabis oil to counter the side effects of chemotherapy for a soft tissue cancer, with remarkable success.

Now in remission, he still takes it daily to prevent the rare condition returning.

To spread the word about cannabis's curative properties, Chico, whose bassist dad was a founding member of Manchester rock band Happy Mondays, will be appearing in Bristol this weekend as part of a campaign calling for cannabis oil to be legalised for medicinal purposes.

He will be jetting in from his home city of Los Angeles, where cannabis oil can be legally consumed, to speak to an audience at the Phoenix Social Enterprise in Redfield on Saturday.

Organised by the United Patients' Alliance, the campaign is urging the UK Government recognise the medical benefits of cannabis and end the practise of criminalising those using the Class B drug in an effort to improve their health.

Chico, whose uncle is Happy Mondays' frontman Shaun Ryder, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma in December 2012.

His mum, Angela, said he was extremely poorly during his 43-week course of chemotherapy, suffering almost permanent nausea and vomiting, fevers and neutropenia.

He also contracted fungal and bacterial bloodstream infections and had to be fed intravenously, then through a stomach tube.

The side effects from the chemotherapy left the teenager in a wheelchair due to damage to nerves in his legs and feet. Like many other cancer patients, he lost his hair, eyebrows and eyelashes.

Angela said she stumbled across the idea of using cannabis oil while spending hundreds of hours researching complementary treatments which might help her son.
