After a month of the Haleigh's Hope Act in Georgia, we're looking at how House Bill 1 is impacting local families.

WJCL News brought you the story of 3-year-old Cooper. His parents support the bill because they believe medical marijuana will reduce his seizures.

Cooper is doing great. His seizures are decreasing. But, not because of medical marijuana. His parents and others in Georgia are faced with challenges in getting it.

Playing with his older brother should be Cooper's biggest concern.

"We're just enjoying life and not holding back with Cooper," said his father Ryan King.

His parents aren't holding back because they know precious moments are priceless. Cooper has Dravet Syndrome which causes seizures. That's why his dad calls House Bill 1 a step in the right direction.

"We are all grateful for it, but right now it's baby steps. It's a big waiting game," he said.

It's legal for Georgians who suffer from a certain illness to have up to 20 ounces of cannabis oil if a physician signs off. But cultivating the cannabis oil isn't allowed in Georgia. So families have to go to other states to get it. But, marijuana possession is still illegal in many states.

So in the mean time, Cooper's parents have taken him off of his very strict eating diet.

"It's very emotional when you talk about it. But to see him eat birthday cake with other kids at a birthday party, just for him to eat my cooking or his mom's cooking, it puts a smile on your face," said King.

The boy who used to have seizures just about everyday, hasn't had one in more than two weeks.

To give you a little more of a perspective of the process Cooper's parents are going through. Cooper's family doctor has to sign off on a patient form which goes to the board of health. Then the board sends them a registry card.
