Washington: New Medical Marijuana Laws Go Into Effect

Medical marijuana shops will soon have to change the way they do business, thanks to new cannabis regulations that went into effect on Friday.

SSB 5052 establishes regulations for the formerly unregulated medical marijuana system and aligns it with the existing recreational system, according to the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board.

"We have to be compliant [with the regulations] whether we personally like it or not," explained Paul Lugo, with the Herbal Connection and the Spokane Chapter of the Coalition for Cannabis Standards and Ethics.

One of the new regulations creates a medical marijuana database.

"If the police just want to say, 'hey does this person have the right to grow these plants, or does this person have the right to have an ounce or two ounces' or whatever," Lugo said, explaining how the database will be used.

It is voluntary, but if patients do not sign up, they won't be able to grow as many plants, and won't qualify for the lower prices.

Spocannabis owner Darren McCrea explained this could cause a problem for his patients that want to be discreet about their marijuana use.

"They don't want to get registered with the state, so they are going to have to stand in line with everybody else and pay the higher price," McCrea explained.

The regulations also limit the number of plants patients can grow, which worries Darren.

"Plants get sick," he explained, "they get infected with bugs."

But these shops must comply, and they will for the sake of their patients and the cannabis movement.

"We understand it's no longer about whether you're medical or [recreational], it's about the cannabis community," Lugo said.

Another change going into effect: Post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injuries will now be considered qualifying conditions for patients.

While the law goes into effect today, many aspects will be phased in throughout the year.
