Plattsburgh - Columbia Care has received approval to dispense its new solid-fill medical-marijuana capsules at its four New York dispensaries, including Plattsburgh.

The New York State Department of Health recently approved the product.

Columbia Care CEO Nicolas Vita said it is the latest step in the company's efforts to improve its patients' lives.

"To accomplish this, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation to provide patients with safe and consistent medicines that enhance access, efficacy and privacy," he said in a statement.

"The launch in New York of our controlled-dose, solid-fill capsule line is a tangible manifestation of these efforts.

"We are proud to offer this new, proprietary, pharmaceutical formulation as the first-of-its-kind in the United States to enhance patient access while re-setting the standard and expectations for care, safety and quality for the entire industry."

THREE TYPES

The company said the pills will be offered in three formulations, created using the full range of active ingredients from plants grown in Columbia Care's natural, organic agricultural process.

Each formulation was designed to serve the needs of particular types of patients and conditions.

The goal was to offer patients a variety of concentrations in a more accessible, subtle and convenient delivery form.

Specific targets are people with fine motor control limitations caused by neuropathy or those who live with chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and inflammatory bowel disease.

POWDER FORM

Columbia Care's patent-pending capsules contain a powder that, unlike liquid-fill capsules, do not carry the risk of leakage.

This new product will make administering and storing medical marijuana medicines more convenient, consistent and efficacious due to the precision of dosing, the company says.

In some cases, this delivery method may extend the intended benefits of the medicine beyond that of a tincture or vaporization oil, resulting in fewer doses per day and potentially better long-term symptom control, the news release said.

Columbia Care says the capsules are the first and only pharmaceutical-quality, controlled-dose, solid-fill pills available to patients not only in the United States but in any jurisdiction where marijuana is available for medical use.

According to the Department of Health website, 717 physicians have registered with the department to prescribe medical marijuana and 8,972 patients have been certified by doctors to receive it.

The Plattsburgh dispensary has received approximately 100 visits since it opened earlier this year. That is up from 65 at the end of July.

In 2017, Columbia Care plans to make these products available in several of its other licensed jurisdictions throughout the United States, beginning with Arizona, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Washington, D.C.
