the plant will get root bound, and the space between the nodes get longer, the general rule is about a gallon for every foot of plant, some people do many other ways and get good results too

your won't kill you plant but it wiil be very stressed and acquire more looking after ie (feeding) as your plant will be drinking faster you may have to water everyday,
Root bound means there is hardly any space left in your pot for roots to grow

someone once told me 1 gallon of soil per month that plant will be in that soil.
1 month veg + 2 month bloom = 3 gallon planter. But I have seen some good results with less.
