Oceanside will begin accepting applications Monday for licenses to cultivate, manufacture, test and distribute medicinal marijuana. However, the seaside community has no rules in place for recreational marijuana sales which were made legal in California six months ago.

Earlier this week, the Oceanside City Council approved cannabis delivery services for residents who have a medicinal marijuana prescription.

California voters approved Prop 64 in November however Oceanside has not implemented a licensing process for recreational marijuana within city limits.

More than 50 percent of voters in Oceanside voted in favor of Prop 64.

In April, city officials approved specific zones for the industry including manufacturing and testing locations for cannabis. However, no ordinance has been approved regarding storefront dispensaries.

Two Type 9 licenses were approved by councilmembers Wednesday with the additional instruction to report back to the council in March 2019 regarding how the businesses are operating and the impact of local law enforcement.

The motion was approved 3-2 with Councilmembers Jack Feller and Esther C. Sanchez voting against the motion.
