UK - One of the biggest drugs factories ever uncovered in Nottinghamshire has been found by police in Giltbrook.

Police raided an industrial unit near Ikea and found 1,700 cannabis plants with a street value of over £700,000.

Inspector Craig Berry said it was the biggest drugs farm ever found in the south of the county, and 'one of the biggest' ever found county-wide.

"There was a similar set up found in the city, and a big one uncovered in Jacksdale a couple of years ago but it's safe to say we've never found anything quite like this in the south of the county," he said.

Officers forced their way into the building on the Giltbrook Industrial Park just before 8pm last Saturday, April 2.

A woman who works next door to the unit on Giltway said she got to work on Monday morning to find its fencing has been kicked down by police.

"It's been going on for years right under our noses and no-one knew about it," she said.

The raid was part of an operation being carried out by officers in another force, who asked Nottinghamshire Police to raid the property after receiving tip-offs from members of the public that drugs were being grown inside.

Specialist growing equipment including high-intensity lighting was found in the building, which had a 'To Let' sign outside.

Det Sgt Lee Young, from Nottinghamshire's drugs squad, said: "We discovered a sophisticated and large-scale cannabis grow inside the unit.

"The plants are now in our possession and will be destroyed — which means the drugs will not end up on the streets of Nottinghamshire.
