More than one tonne of herbal cannabis, with an estimated street value of €13m, has been seized at Dublin Port by customs officers.

The haul was found concealed in a freight consignment that had arrived from South Africa today.

The seizure was made as a result of ongoing monitoring of goods imported from a number of high-risk areas by the National Freight Intelligence Unit.

The container, which contained granite lecture stands, was scanned by the customs' x-ray scanner and a detailed examination was then carried out.

Investigations into the discovery are ongoing.
