PROVIDENCE, R.I.–Rhode Island health officials have accepted 18 applications from people interested in opening so-clled "compassion centers" to distribute medical marijuana.

The Department of Health on Friday said it would review the applications and hold a public hearing on them Feb. 7.

Medical marijuana is legal under state law. Legislators approved a plan last year that allows medical marijuana to be sold to registered patients at up to three nonprofit stores, dubbed compassion centers.

The applications propose putting centers in communities as varied as Warwick, Portsmouth and North Scituate.

This is the second time the department has accepted applications. Officials restarted the process after none of the initial applications qualified.
