36 leftist SYRIZA MPs submitted a question to Greek Health Minister Panagiotis Kouroumblis regarding the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. The question, titled "National plan for medicinal cannabis," follows a previous request for the legalization of medical marijuana production in February.

The SYRIZA deputies note that one of the consequences of their first request lead to the publication of a joint ministerial decree on the matter, resulting in the first cultivation of industrial cannabis with the first crop to be collected in Fall.

The deputies have cited requests by Greek patients calling for the revision of outdated legislation to allow for medicine containing THC to be prescribed. They want to have legal possession of marijuana for medical reasons. The MPs presented data from other European countries that have already legalized marijuana for patients in all its forms with the support of the National Health Service.

In Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Italy, medicinal marijuana is already available. "The financial benefits of cultivation of our own cannabis in Greece for medicinal/pharmaceutical purposes and for use in research would be multi-faceted (rejuvenating our agricultural economy and processing, resumption of export of hemp products after many years of stagnation, strengthening insurance funds to escape the burden of expensive prescription pharmaceutical products.)"

The deputies want to know when dialogue will begin for the legalization of cannabis and what the government intends to do regarding this.
