420 Magazine’s Official Girl Scout Cookies Comparative Grow By DonkeyDick

:love: :green_heart::420::green_heart::love:

Welcome to the @DonkeyDick contribution to the Official 420 Magazine’s Girl Scout Cookies Comparative Grow!

With seeds provided by 420 Magazine sponsor Weed Seeds Express this is our first collective international comparative cultivation event. The scale of this project is a testament to the success of 420 Magazine. Over forty gardeners all over the world will be demonstrating different techniques on the same seed stock.

What a great idea. One that’s been germinating for some time, no doubt. :thanks: @420 Rob for everything.

Here in the deep south in Aotearoa, New Zealand we have the cultural and culinary phenomenon we call Girl Guide Biscuits. If the flowers of WSE GSC taste anything like these we may have to lay the foundations for a new food pyramid.

The WSE page on feminised Girl Scout Cookies photoperiod seeds says it grows everywhere from polar to equatorial regions, low or high altitude. You can’t say fairer than that. It also asserts a claim to usefulness regarding pain and sleep. This is of interest to me as I get more of one than the other.

Thanks to @Weed Seeds Express for the expense and effort they have given to make this happen.

Other 420 Magazine sponsors who will feature in this photojournal are Mars Hydro and Geoflora & Earth Alive.

Mars Hydro because I use their FC3000 in my flower room. My flower room is 4’ by 4’ for which the FC3000 is under rated, and over performing for me, so I’ve been lucky. Lucky enough, for example, to have been gifted this light through a @Mars Hydro promotion here on 420 Magazine. I am very grateful.

Geoflora & Earth Alive because they contacted me and asked for delivery details so that they can sponsor my garden. The biosecurity curtain around NZ is proudly maintained by underpaid vigilance. They sound like terrific products, but I expect them to be bumped on their myco content. I just wanted to give them a shout-out here because they must be going to considerable lengths to sponsor more than forty of our 420 Magazine gardens. So thanks @GeoFlora Nutrients

Girl Scout Cookies in the Stable

I grow in soil. I recycle it and I’ve been lucky so far. I sift it and treat it with enzymes between runs, then treat it with mycorrhizae and let it sit before using it again.

I just want to remind all the gardeners out there to use a mask whenever you handle soil and take all necessary protections against legionnaires disease. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again it rarely happens, but it really happens. It happened to a mate of mine. Your covid mask should suffice. Please remember to wear it.

I do use new, sterile soil for seed propagation.

5 cups, 200ml R.O. H2O.

After the tricky two week seedling stage they will all spend at least four weeks in the vegetative stage. From seedling to the end of veg the light cycle will be 18/6. I expect to stagger their transitions to flowering. This is one of the ways I optimise my spaces.

They will transition to 20 litre pots for flowering.

The first to flower will be in early June for a harvest late in August.

I will number them 1-5 as they show above ground and they may as well stay in that sequence.

The first I will leave untopped and untrained. It isn’t my growing style, but we’ll see what she looks like xmas tree-style with a central cola and a subcanopy of satellites. GSC 2 through 5 will be topped and trained to varying degrees.

If there are phenotypic varieties displayed in this group of 5 my intention is to take clones of each to choose a keeper and for my wife @Sugarleaf to do the same.

At harvest I strip plants of fans one branch at a time and pluck/trim anything I don’t want to keep. If flowers are sufficiently fluffy and showing a heavy density of trichomes I will collect this material separately from a close trim. This gets air-dried on cookie racks.

All flowers (still on branches cut to a manageable size) are then washed and rinsed in a series of buckets then hung to dry overnight. The next morning flowers are stripped from their stalks and placed in a refrigerator for 10-14 days.

They are then cured in jars for at least two weeks to “gas off” the ammonia and CO2 which occur as chlorophyll naturally breaks down. If you get it right.

These techniques, not just for cultivation but for washing, the low and slow dry, the cure... and many, many ways to weaponise cannabis as medicine in my war against chronic pain... were all learned as news to me since joining 420 Magazine scarcely two years ago.

We will stay on topic, but context is everything (yeronner!) I will be succinct. These have been two years which, without 420 Magazine, I would not have expected. Thanks again, Rob. ‘Nuff said.

Bring on the med’s!

Day 0.0

Seeds soaking and soil prepped on a heat mat.

In less than 24 hrs all five seeds were showing tails.

I zoom in like this using my phone to see what is happening close to.

I didn’t touch the seeds from packet to soil.

Day 0.1

Day 0.2

It’s a privilege to be growing flora on these fora. It’s an honour to be growing alongside some of the very best cannabis cultivators in the world.

Mugs away. We’ll have another cup of tea then send a runner to the publishers with the proofs. Stay tuned for the progress of this GSC garden in the next monthly instalment of the weekly rag we call the donkey dailies.

Thanks for reading.

I also suffer from chronic pain. It can be debilitating at times. Other times, it is something my brain has enough energy to ignore. I feel for you and hope you are able to grow some amazing GSC that will help your pain and overall life experience.

I'll be doing my best to watch everyone's journal! Good luck @DonkeyDick!

I'd like to follow along, Donkey. I brought treats.

Day 0.3 and nothing to report except that whatever is happening is underground and out of sight. :yahoo:
I’m liking the heat mat. It’s keeping temps steady around the clock.

Thank you for your support with the pain thing. Debilitating, decimating. How do I know the heat pad keeps temps steady around the clock?
Cheers BA I’ll be trying to keep up with everyone too.
:high-five: hey @Dohc007 good to have you along.
And talk about timing! The first time I see you in six years and you happen to visit the day stickers and seeds both arrive?!
(With timing like that we must be musicians!)
:theband:
(I mean we were jamming when the email confirming delivery arrived).
What was a donkey to do?
All I can say is I still have five for backup/continuity and I hope those two ‘extras’ bring you luck

Aww they look delicious!! Straight to the chase. I like it. I imagine they feel as good as they taste as good as they look!
I’m honoured to infer this journal is among your chosen dozen :high-five:
I hope your mail drop lands soon.
Hey, Boo :ciao:
Dude. :snowboating:
Didn’t you just harvest your own body weight in GSC? I can’t wait to try out these meds.

How do I know the heat pad keeps temps steady around the clock?
I personally enjoy having access to data. I use wifi sensors to keep track of temps and humidity in various spots throughout my home. Just gives me a little less to think about when it comes to my upcoming indoor grow (my first). My brain would be frantic all day if I didn't know what the temps were.

I would recommend a good wifi thermostat to be completely certain of the temps and the ability to trend & chart it. Otherwise, it is simply a guessing game. Without an appropriate thermostat, you will never know the difference the ambient temps cause to your pad and soil temps. You want to have the probe in the soil to be completely certain if that is what you want to maintain at a constant temp. You could also put the probe on the mat and then offset the pad to the required temp needed to reach your desired soil temp.

The past couple years, I have germinated all my seeds in a semi-insulated storage shed. Temps stay predictable with a natural rise and fall of the ambient temps, but not drastic. It is one less thing to worry about for my head. I figure the strong genetics is what we are after right?! Then there is no reason to baby them too much from beginning. The strongest seeds will thrive in its desired environment. The ebb and flow of nature is what I'm trying to help them with. I feel the plant responds better to natural encouragements like this.

My problem is I am able to grow them and make them happy until they hit maturity. Then I turn into the dipshit dad that doesn't know anything and is freaking out about every little thing. Ultimately watching their demise slowly. Sad story...but true story man!!!

How important is it to you keeping the temps constant? Then the next question would be about the budget to accomplish your goal.

That was a long answer...but I'm baked and couldn't help it. Figured it would take too long to delete and easier to just hit the 'Post reply' button instead. Good luck!

That’s a lovely little tragicomic vignette. :thanks:
You’re in the right place now. We’ll see you get to harvest with minimal damage to your suspension from those speed humps on the road to happiness.

:lot-o-toke: Ha! All good.
How important is it to you keeping the temps constant?
It is reassuring to have removed the most unpredictable variable at this delicate stage. I don’t want to waste the sponsors’ time.
Then the next question would be about the budget to accomplish your goal.
Mmm. Zero budget. I mentioned about recycling soil. It’s no exaggeration.

I was going to run an in-house comparative with a couple of these GSCs and run one on gardening stuff from the supermarket augmented with whatever I can make, forage or find. I need to get ready with a plan B for when my off-sponsor plant food runs out.

Budget won’t allow that comparison to run yet. It’s contextual to pain management, having traded my salary for a disability allowance.
Otherwise, it is simply a guessing game.
Yep. Dead reckoning, knowing my kit and terroir, and good luck!
would recommend a good wifi
:) coincidentally @Dohc007 specialises in such things and has found some problem of architecture is a barrier to getting house wifi in the garage/garden. Good thought though. Great minds, mumble something.

I had kind of meant my comment as a throwaway rhetorical thing to emphasise the fact that I’m up all hours with painsomnia. The heat pad really does keep a steady temperature. Even at the pre-dawn chill which is about to start frosting here.

It’s kind of a function of four days now with very little sleep that I will miscommunicate. I spent all day yesterday on the opener because I could see if I let it go another day or two it was going to get tricky. Thanks for understanding.

I appreciate the time and consideration you gave it. Keeping track of the data is essential to get in the VPD. Cheers.
I’m subbed for this one
:high-five:
Wouldn't miss it brother :green_heart: :cheer:
Nice.

Good to have you reading. We’ll be back with breaking news as soon as there is some.

In like Flynn! :high-five:

I love having lots of tabs open that all start with the exact same title so I have no idea whose thread is which tab. I think I'm up to five now. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Just wait until you have 40 tabs open all with the exact same title. That's why I was trying to see if we could rename all the journals so the member's name is first but that idea got kiboshed. :(

Hi all. A little bit of news today. I don’t mean to undersell it, it’s good news!

Four days after seeds touched water little croquet hoop necks of seedlings have appeared in a couple of cups.

These where I had checked and found nothing two hours earlier while giving the dry crust a light spritz. I’ll report in again if there are further developments today.

Day 0.4
