420 Magazine's Official Girl Scout Cookies Comparative Grow By Emilya

According to the tracking information, I will have a FedEx package at my door this afternoon, so I am going to get this journal started now, so that I have a place to post the picture of the package as it arrives.
Here is the traditional start of a journal picture of the finished product that I will refer to later when we get near harvest, to see if my buds look like this bud... a good indicator of when it is time for harvest.

This appears to be a very "meaty" end product, so part of the planning for this 12 plant mega grow is going to be in having enough tomato cage type supports later on for each of the plants. This will be the largest single strain production run I have attempted thus far in my long indoor growing career, and I am ready for the challenge.

My 6'x6' veg room has been emptied so as to be able to handle the massive influx of life about to hit it with the second 6x6 veg room soon to be empty to be able to handle the overflow when we get to 1 gallon containers. The bloom room will be clear in about 2 months and will also be able to serve as a late stage veg room as we uppot into the final containers to get ready for bloom.

This will be a fully organic grow. I plan on going with 24 hours soaked seeds directly to solo cups, specially built for this purpose. From there we will move to 1 gallon containers and then to 7 gallon containers for the final size we will go to bloom in. The soil will be Purple Cow supersoil in the bottom third of every container, with a layer of aged cow manure at the very bottom. Next will be a thin layer of @DYNOMYCO and worm castings and then a mixture of FFOF and FFHF with some additional raw amendments to build up the rest of the container, with a small amount of Happy Frog at the very top of the solo cups to give the seeds a good start without having to deal with a lot of hot soil at first. This hot soil is going to be pretreated this evening with Soil Activator and kept moist until use so that it can cook a little bit longer as we get ready for it. In later container builds I will also employ the use of raw nutrient spikes as well as the layering techniques, as taught by The Rev in his book, TLO, True Living Organics.

I plan on vegging for 2 months and then moving to bloom. I will be using Uncle Ben's topping method so as to produce some short plants capable of holding a lot of weight, and easily corralled by a tomato cage. Along with the excellent soil, I will be using @GeoFlora Nutrients as recommended all through the grow. My water is simply tap water pumped into a 2000L (55gal) barrel with a tablespoon of ascorbic acid added to eliminate the chlorine products and a mosquito dunk added with each new barrel full of water to proactively treat for fungus gnats and other larvae stage pests. My grow rooms are not humidity controlled, and as we move into summertime here in the USA Midwest, they will invariably be too hot, but we will keep the air moving and will do the best we can to maintain. Lighting needs will be taken care of by two more of our sponsors, @Mars Hydro with their SP-3000 and @NextLight with their MEGA commercial quality light. Beginning near budset, I will also start supplementing with another sponsored product, @Terpinator to supply that extra boost that the massive buds will want.

I have been a little lax lately in keeping my journals updated regularly, but due to the commitment made to get involved in this comparative grow, I will be spending a lot of time on this project and will keep it well documented... its not like there won't be something to do every day on this massive project.

So here we go! With any luck I can get home in time to take a picture of the package arriving!

Woooo!!! About damn time! Geeeeez...making us all wait with anticipation like this is just plain cruel! :passitleft:

I am stoked to watch your grow. I'm using The Rev's 2.2 soil mix. Just started mixing it yesterday. Gives me at least 2 months to cook. Should be long enough...right?! :hmmmm: I'm going to add some of the Soil Activator to it today too. Looks like amazingly potent stuff!

In later container builds I will also employ the use of raw nutrient spikes as well as the layering techniques, as taught by The Rev in his book, TLO, True Living Organics.
I'm curious if you think the spikes will be necessary if we are utilizing @GeoFlora Nutrients . This is where I'm a little stuck on how to proceed with the TLO method Rev recommends. I will be growing one of my plants the Rev's method and the others using the GeoFlora products.

I'm so glad you posted about this. I have the mosquito bits but I wasn't sure if I could/should use them with the TLO soil. Safe to assume then that I can dissolve the mosquito bits in the water jugs I plan to use for feeding and watering? Or can I just mix it in with my soil now? Is it safe to sprinkle it on top of the mulch and let it dissolve as I water?

Thanks for letting me hit with 20 questions... already! I hope you have been well @Emilya and I genuinely thank you for your personal investment of time to this forum community. You are appreciated!

Nice aquarium, my other pastime ,,but for this pastime I'm here to learn the organic way to grow

Thanks! It's a relatively new reef aquarium and still basically cycling but in another 6 months or so I'll be able to start adding some Coral. Between these three major hobbies it's a wonder I have any spare time at all! Did I tell you I ride motorcycles too?.. so there goes the rest of my free time.

The soil activator will definitely help your soil to cook, but I would say two months is bare minimum. No the spikes aren't necessary but they also aren't going to hurt a thing. It's not like when using readily available nutrients where you can over feed, you can have all kinds of stuff sitting in the soil that isn't available to the plant and that the microbes can eventually get to. The advantage of the spikes is that the roots can choose whether to go through that or not and if they do they adapt themselves for that job. Geo Flora even says on their website that you can supplement their program with other products. The mosquito bits are not nearly as effective in the soil as they are adding them to water and letting the chemical seep into the water and then by watering with that you apply the toxin right where it is needed. I definitely recommend mixing it with your water 30 minutes prior to watering rather than mixing it in the soil.

I hope I don't end up being a pain in your side. If I am, please let me know. It is not my intention.

Is there a measurement per gallon using the bits? Is it ok to just drop some into my watering jugs and let it sit in there for days or weeks until I end up using it?

Also, you mentioned using the @Terpinator . I recently picked some up. The instructions say to use from the very beginning. You mentioned using it as you're approaching flowering is when you start. Have you ever used it from the beginning? Does it make a big difference? Thanks

If I remember correctly the bits are applied at one tablespoon per gallon and need to sit for 30 minutes before applying. As far as using the Terminator from the beginning, I'm pretty sure that everything the plants need is in the geoflora and that it isn't until later in flowering when the plants will use more if you give it to them. So I've never tried giving it early so I'm not sure what kind of difference that would make but I do think that I see a difference in flower when I use it in beefier and more resiny beds. It might be interesting to do a an experiment with say 1/3 of this grow and see if it does make a difference early on. It's all about the science you know!

U should get some live rock ,,will help build up your beneficial bacteria (just b careful with wot comes in the rock) ,,my hiding passenger's were a few bristle worms

Between this 40B and its 10g Refugium, I have approximately 40lbs of live rock and 80lbs of live sand and a well rounded cleaning crew. I like minimal water changes, please. My worries are not ammonia, nitrates and nitrites... the new water still is still not stable with its alkalinity and pH... it drives me crazy.
I drive the extra miles to go to a well run LFS, who's coral displays say it all. These kids have been in the business all of their lives and are some of the best at what they do. Bristle worms... yikes. I would never go back.

And now... back to the comparative grow show! I have been a busy little bee this evening!

I promised to get this grow going the moment I received my seeds, and that is what I have done. I have approximately 10 gallons of soil waiting for this grow. The soil is a 50/50 mix of FFOF and FFHF, having been used once, baked in the oven for an hour at 250° to kill anything living in it and then mixed into this half barrel. Then I amended this soil with several of the things that go into making a supersoil... a little epsom, azomite, rock phosphate, humic acid, worm castings, oyster shell flour, bone meal, high P bat guano, and VULX (!!) (I have been saving my Vulx for something big) but I let it sit, dry... until now.

On my last grow, as an experiment, I used this soil mix with Vulx added in as the upper part of my container build, with Purple Cow super soil in the bottom third, on my Do-si-do/Wedding Cake grow, for their final containers. There was no attempt to "cook" this mix into anything usable at that point... this supersoil want-to-be mix is simply acting as a plant holder in that grow, letting Geoflora and its microbes use as much of it or as little of it as needed.

This grow will be different. Tonight I added EarthAlive Soil Activator to the mix and watered it in. The instructions were a bit vague, except in how dangerous it would be to breathe in this stuff, but I extrapolated and guessed and came up with the following. The package says 3.5 oz can treat 20gal of soil. So, I added 1.8 oz to my 10-12 gallons of uncooked soil mix with Vulx.

It took 2 gallons of RO water to re-wet this soil enough so that after about a half hour of hand mixing, the soil in the tub was moist and very rich looking and smelling. I will let this cook and will stir it every day until it is used, keeping it moist from now on. It is my belief that this soil is going to really make a difference in this grow.

Then, I broke open the cute little 6 packs of seeds from @Weed Seeds Express and dunked them into a bowl of RO water. When I see tails, most likely tomorrow night at this time, I will get busy planting them in solo cups.

Never fear... this rich soil mix isn't going to be the first thing these seeds see.... I am going to put a nice bed of very easy going Fox Farm Happy Frog as the top third of the cups... but brace yourselves...
The lower third will be supersoil with a thin layer of composted cow manure at the very bottom. The middle third will be our just created and activated soil mix, along with a layer of @DYNOMYCO and then the upper third will be the relatively inert Happy Frog. A week into the grow, I will throw a teaspoon of @GeoFlora Nutrients VEG on the top, and call that week zero.

It's going to be a fun one! Let's see how big they will get!

This comparative grow is such a fantastic idea!

I loved reading your consummately knowledgeable, cover all the bases, thorough to the point of fanatical (and I say fanatical with all due sincere respect) approach because it the antithesis of my bare-bones pragmatic approach so I’m quite intrigued to see what we each produce with the same strain of seeds. This is great.

Good luck, Emilya, but I doubt you need it.

Hi Emilya.

I'd like to tag along. I've never attended one of your grows and since you're pretty famous around here, I figure this would be a good one to follow right from the get go.

Quick question - What do FFOF and FFHF stand for?
