Advocates Look To Extend Block On New Montana Medical Marijuana Rules

Medical marijuana advocates are looking to extend a block on new state rules that ban pot providers from receiving compensation and limits them to three patients.

A hearing on the Montana Cannabis Industry Association's request for a preliminary injunction is scheduled for Thursday before District Judge Jim Reynolds in Helena.

Reynolds has issued a temporary hold on the restrictions against medical marijuana providers while the case is under review.

Last month, voters upheld the law passed by the Republican-led Legislature. Supporters say it aims to better regulate an industry that has grown beyond the intent of the 2004 initiative to allow medical marijuana for very ill patients.

The state Supreme Court this fall ruled the new law does not violate the constitutional rights to privacy and to pursue employment and health.
