The Arizona Department of Public Safety says they arrested a man early Wednesday who was smuggling marijuana.

An officer stopped a tractor trailer outside of the Phoenix Metro area early Wednesday morning.

During the traffic stop the officer asked if he could search the truck and they found 1,658 pounds of pot inside boxes.

Highway Patrol officers arrested 64-year-old Nathaniel Fripp of Georgia on charges of possession of marijuana for sale, and transportation of marijuana for sale.

Officers estimate the street value of the marijuana at $1.7 million.

Fripp was booked into a Maricopa County jail.
