Neighbors in an upscale section of Fresno are on edge after an attempted robbery at a medical marijuana dispensary.

An armed gunman tried to hold up the Central Valley Collective around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The dispensary is located on Shaw Avenue near Palm, across the street from Fig Garden Village.

The gunman got into the dispensary by posing as a new patient. When the clerk went to get the marijuana, he locked the door behind him, locking the thief out. The robber then ran into the Old Fig Garden neighborhood to escape but was captured by police a short time later. The suspect also threw his gun away before he was captured but it was located by a Sheriff's K-9.

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims said, "This is a business... they are dealing marijuana, medical marijuana, and a thief made a decision to arm himself and try and steal that marijuana.

Fresno County has taken a tougher stance on pot dispensaries and marijuana gardens putting a moratorium on both and trying to ban them all together.

Fresno County Supervisor Henry Perea said, "The very concerns we had growing the last year have come to fruition. There are dispensaries in neighborhoods and there's nothing we can do right now to shut them down, but come April when we vote on that ordinance, assuming it passes, which I believe it will, they will all be out of business."

The suspect was booked into Fresno County Jail and deputies believe there may be a second suspect who was not captured. He is described as a heavy-set black male.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Fresno County Sheriff's Office at (559) 488-3111 or CrimeStoppers at (559) 498-STOP (7867).
