More than $800,000 worth of cannabis has been seized from a rental property in Brisbane's south-west.

A tip-off from the public led police to search of a Heathwood address on Tuesday afternoon where they discovered an "active and sophisticated" cannabis hydroponic house with more than 170 mature cannabis plants.

The power meter had been bypassed at the two-storey unoccupied rental, with electricity stolen to help grow about $850,000 worth of cannabis plants, a police spokeswoman said.

Police were yet to identify those responsible for the grow house, who had paid cash to rent directly from the property owner.

Detective Inspector Lance Vercoe said the owner was left with a significantly damaged rental property.

"The offenders have caused tens of thousands of dollars' worth of damage to the property, breaking through doors and walls in order to grow the cannabis," he said.

"Members of the public who seek to rent their properties should be extremely wary of renting their properties out privately and should consider taking the appropriate steps to protect your property."
