Police have uncovered a hydroponic cannabis crop after a suspicious house fire at Prospect was extinguished by firefighters.

Firefighters were called to the house on Albert Street in the city's inner-north just after 9:00am and found two rooms in the house ablaze.

No-one was home at the time and the fire was brought under control before it could spread to nearby houses.

Police said when they searched the house they found "numerous cannabis plants growing hydroponically".

Neighbor Mark Chester said he saw the window blow out and the front room engulfed in flames.

"We were worried there might have been someone still in there but checked and there was no car in the driveway and no car in the carport," he said.

"So we spoke to the neighbors and they thought they [the occupants] hadn't been here for a couple of days so [that] was relieving."

Police said the fire was suspicious and investigators were trying to determine the cause of ignition.
