The reason.
Jasmin has been floored by yet another gruelling day of epileptic seizures.
The 12-year-old suffers Dravet syndrome, a rare form of catastrophic epilepsy.
As Jasmin slept, her mother, Lake Cootharaba resident Sue, spoke with hope in her voice, at the thought of marijuana being legally grown, regulated and distributed to those with chronic, terminal or painful conditions.
"It'll be a great thing if it goes through," Sue Paynter said.
Jasmin has been on a number of medications since she was an eight-month-old.
Sue said the side effects of such prolonged use of pharmaceutical drugs was tough. Stunted growth just one of the effects she'd seen in her daughter.
"I'm always looking out for something that's going to be a healthier option and may help her," Sue said.
Federal Health Minister Sussan Ley was set to introduce legislation in Parliament today, pushing for a national cannabis cultivation scheme through a national licensing and permit program.
Sue said she'd been following the progress of other kids with similar conditions to her daughter and said medicinal marijuana had produced great results.
"There's a lot of success stories and I do a lot of research," she said.
She said the more available medical cannabis became and a legalised, united approach with medical professionals on board, the better situations for many Australian families would become.
"You see it (positive results) and you want that for your own child," Sue said.
"Even if people choose not to use it, it's having the choice... we should be able to choose as parents."
