Autoflowering Defined?

I've noticed that many of the different strains, not just ruderalis, but sativa and indica too, are often available as autoflowering. How is this different from defined flowering times associated with 12/12 light cycles? Is it necessary or even better/worse for an indoor enclosed growbox? Thanks for the help.

Autoflowering meanes that you dont have to run a 12/12 cycle they gro under 24 hr light, they kno naturally when to start to bud.

With autos they have a shorter life span and grow super fast when u run them 24/7 u will.have. bigger plants way better yeilds then u would with 12/12 cycle I learned the hard way
