Bad or good way to fond dud seeds?

hey iv had an idea when i germ seeds i crack them open a bit wit my tweasers if they dont getm in 2 days to see if they are dud seeds or not is this a good idea or bad outa a batch of 5 iv had 2 survive and none were duds so am i killing the seeds?

ps whats a relly good way to germ seeds i use iplok and wet paper towel

cracking them open with tweezers will kill the embryo. You're lucky to have 2.

don't do that.

I use an old CD case and 4 squares of toilet paper. I have better germ rates than with the paper towels. Not sure why, but I do.

I've used this 'shell popping' tech on older seeds (2-3 years old) and have saved about 50% of them. My theory is that the hardens over time to the point that the baby can't pop it's shell by itself. the ones I saved this way grew to maturity just like the rest.

Now that doesn't mean that extreme caution isn't required, too much pressure will crush the babe. Some I've popped were being strangled by their own root, just couldn't break the shell:>)

take a small piece of sand paper and line a matchbox with it. Toss the seeds in and give it a shake for a minute or so. Scuffing up the hull helps make the seed more able to absorb water and the seam to crack easier. That way you don't crack the shell and risk hurting the embryo inside.
