A Senate Judiciary Committee moved without opposition a bill to the Senate floor that prevents law enforcement officers from arresting medical marijuana users in Louisiana. It also recommended a bill that would add several designer drugs to the Schedule I classification on the Uniform Controlled Dangerous Substances Law.

Under current law, medical marijuana users are protected from prosecution, but not arrest. Baton Rouge Democrat Sen. Yvonne Colomb’s SB35 would extend that protection to patients, pharmacies, and labs involved with the state-sponsored medical program.

Louisiana District Attorney’s Association Executive Director Pete Adams suggested the bill was “overbroad,” but said he would work with Colomb to tighten the language.

Additionally, the committee unanimously recommended HB225 by Rep. Kevin Pearson, R-Slidell, which would make several synthetic opioids illegal in Louisiana.

The brief discussion focused on two types of drugs — one group chemically similar to fentanyl, and the other U-47700, is better known as “Pink.”

Fentanyl and Pink are significantly more potent than morphine, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Pink, which is a relatively new drug, currently is legal in most states.
