Buffalo Grove is getting prepared for a possible state law allowing medical marijuana distribution facilities.

On Monday, the village board passed a resolution directing the plan commission to recommend possible zoning regulations for the cannabis dispensaries.

"The proposed resolution does not sanction, prohibit nor otherwise discriminate against the establishment of cannabis dispensaries," Village Manager Dane Bragg said. "Rather it provides a mechanism for the village to consider appropriate zoning controls."

The move was prompted by news that the General Assembly may consider legislation allowing the use of medical marijuana.

Bragg noted that the bill has not passed out of committee but could be resurrected by the spring session.

The village staff recommended the resolution to ensure that the village's zoning regulations are adequate to address this type of use.

Under the law, only one distribution facility would be permitted per state Senate district. Village President Jeffrey Braiman noted that Buffalo Grove lies in two Senate districts.

"I wonder what would happen in 10 years when they change the boundaries again," he said, referring to the redistricting that takes place after each census.
