City police pulled an estimated 600 marijuana plants out of a south St. Vital house Tuesday morning after what neighbours say was a dramatic takedown of the alleged pot-growing operation.

Heavily armed tactical officers and other cops drove up quickly to the Eastmount Drive home in several vehicles, one nearby resident said, adding that they apprehended a man and woman as they were about to pull out of its driveway in a Dodge minivan.

One police truck "cut it off, and then it was like a swarm -- about 10 cop cars, and there was a big, white police van here," Richard, a resident who didn't give his last name, told the Winnipeg Sun while pointing to the street.

"About seven cops jumped out of there, dressed in full SWAT. There was an Asian lady and man in the van. They took them away, and then they busted into the house."

Police didn't disclose the number of plants seized by officers or their estimated street value. However, one resident of the street said an officer had mentioned a rough estimate of 500 to 600 plants seized at the single-storey house.

Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen confirmed that two adults were taken into custody at the scene.

Charges hadn't been laid as of Tuesday about noon.

The police drug unit is handling the investigation, though staff from the provincial fire commissioner's office were involved at the scene.
