The Arvin City Council is expected to take up the issue of growing marijuana at its next meeting.

California voters approved Proposition 64, which means cities and counties are re-evaluating how they regulate marijuana. The law allows the state to levy a cultivation tax on growers of $9.25 per ounce for flowers and $2.75 per ounce for leaves. Cities and counties can impose their own taxes to cover costs of services, including enforcement.

HdL, a marijuana management consulting firm out of Diamond Bar, is scheduled to present its findings on commercial marijuana farming to Arvin's city council next week.

Arvin City Manage Alfonso Noyola said, "I think this is the first step to just understand what this new business is about and the pros and cons of that."

According to the Bureau of Marijuana Control, state growing licenses will not be available until 2018. The bureau anticipates state regulations will be developed by January 1.

The Arvin City Council meeting is scheduled Tuesday at 6 p.m. in city council chambers on Campus Drive.
