California Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation Thursday that will create a specialized license for smaller medical cannabis cultivators under the state's new medical marijuana regulations.

The bill's author, North Coast Assemblyman Jim Wood (D-Healdsburg), said the legislation was created for the North Coast region to help small "cottage" farmers be able to come into compliance without meeting large fees and difficult standards.

"It's just not fair to require the small farmers to adhere to the same standards as larger operations," Wood said in a news release. "Now the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) will be required to develop regulations for 2018 that address the unique characteristics of small farm practices."

The bill applies to farmers that have 2,500-square-feet or less of total plant canopy size for mixed-light cultivation, 25 mature plants grown outdoors, or 500-square-feet or less of total plant canopy for indoor grows occurring on a single property.

The bill amends the Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act signed by Brown last year.
