CA: Cannabis Dispensaries Are Eyeing Davis

Prospective cannabis businesses are circling Davis, which is set to be a hot market for recreational and medical marijuana sales when the city begins issuing permits for dispensaries and delivery services.

At least eight dispensaries are hoping to open up shop in Davis. Only four of those will receive permits from the city, however, as Davis leaders have set that as the limit for the first year when business is legal.

The window when official applications will be accepted by the city isn't set to open until today, but some potential dispensaries are already paying rent at their desired locations while others are fine-tuning their business plans.

Over the summer, city officials received five pre-applications from business owners indicating their interest in operating a dispensary in Davis. Those businesses are:

* California Grown Inc. at 1605 Second St.;

* Davis Cannabis Company at 1221 Third St.;

* River City Phoenix Davis at 1100 W. Chiles Road;

* Davis Cannabis Collective at 2121 Second St.; and

* Manna Roots at 117 D St.

The Enterprise has identified three other potential dispensaries through public notices and press releases.

The Delta of Venus cafe at 122 B St. hopes to operate a dispensary out of a renovated granny flat at the rear of their property. Delta of Venus' main building would continue as a coffee shop and performance space, and a dispensary by the same name would sell medical and recreational cannabis out of the granny flat.

A pair of local residents are eyeing 416 F St. for their dispensary, but they haven't released the name of the prospective business.

The Davis-based Good People's Farm Company is also hoping to locate in downtown Davis, though an official address has not been submitted to the city.

The applicants for these businesses have a mix of local and regional roots.

Two names on the pre-application list are linked to Sacramento-based medical cannabis dispensaries. River City Phoenix Davis would be a sister business to the River City Phoenix dispensary in Sacramento.

The Davis Cannabis Collective is proposed by the same team that runs A Therapeutic Alternative, another medical dispensary in Sacramento.

The pre-applications for the Davis Cannabis Company included an El Dorado Hills address, and California Grown Inc. included a Courtland address. California Grown also has applied for a manufacturing permit in addition to indicating interest in running a dispensary.

Multiple cannabis businesses could find a home in the small business park at 2121 Second St. Earlier this year, Davis' first cannabis manufacturing business, Blessed Extracts, was approved for that property. Blessed Extracts develops oils, tinctures and vape pen cartridges and is restricted to wholesale-only retail sales at its site.

A cannabis delivery business named People's Kush also is eyeing the business park. This delivery business is proposed side by side with the Delta of Venus application, and would supply that location if approved.

The official window for cannabis applications will be open from today through Oct. 13. Once the applications are gathered, city staffers will process them all at once and put them before the council in early 2018 for conditional-use-permit approval.

State permits for cannabis businesses are expected to be issued in early 2018, but businesses in Davis likely will have to wait until spring to open their doors.
