Willow Creek, Calif. - The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors voted in favor of a marijuana excise tax measure on July 21. The tax will charge a fee between $1 to $3 per square foot.

Since the proposed excise tax passed the board, people are threatening to move to a different county for fear of it getting passed in November, according to county officials. However, compared to other counties and their proposed excise tax, Humboldt County's is considered low.

"When you look at the tax you actually have to look at it in comparison with other counties that are trying to aggressively court this industry and a lot of places are looking at up to $30 a square foot or $100 a plant," said Supervisor Mark Lovelace, with Humboldt County District 3. "This one to three dollars a square foot in Humboldt County is incredibly low."

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors have proposed a marijuana excise tax that would charge a fee of $100 per plant, according to county reports.

While some cannabis cultivators may be upset by the proposed marijuana excise tax, others think it's something the county needs.

"I feel it's a necessity," said Jonathan Gilbert, a cannabis cultivator said.
