The city of Davis has approved of the first cannabis manufacturing facility in the city.

Blessed Extracts will produce wholesale products in a non-descriptive laboratory located on the 2100 block of 2nd Street in the Davis Commerce Park.

The company will also conduct research and testing inside the 10,300 square foot facility.

The company will extract the medicine and transform it into vape pen cartridges, tinctures and oils. They'll use chemicals, like carbon dioxide, ethanol, hexane and butane, during the extraction process.

The city said the extraction will use 7,866 cubic feet of hazardous gases and 248 gallons of hazardous liquids. This exceeds the city's 200 cubic-foot thresholds for gasses and a 55-gallon threshold for liquids.

The policy does not prohibit businesses from exceeding these amounts but imposes stricter safety measures and oversight from the city and fire department.

"It involves essentially the same solvents and processes that are used for food manufacturing. It can be most easily compared to extracting oil from soybeans, or the process of making tofu. We are thrilled to be a part of the Davis community," Blessed Extracts Chief Marketing Officer Amelia Paterson said in a statement.

The building will be nearby other laboratories that the city said also use hazardous materials.

But, this new laboratory will also be by a swim school, cross fit and dance company.

Kelly Gorman-Marzolf's daughter goes to the swim school and said, "I don't have a problem with it as long as they follow the rules and the laws and the regulations that the state of California have put in place for them."

The city approved the business venture after the company passed a state mandated vetting process that ensures public safety and health.

Blessed Extracts will likely move in by the end of the year as long as it completes all permitting requirements.
