Firefighters responded to a call Wednesday morning to find a Sacramento marijuana grow house fully ablaze.
Remnants of about 100 marijuana plants were found in the 7400 block of 32nd Avenue, said Chris Harvey, Sacramento Fire Department spokesman, after firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after 2:30 a.m. Work crews boarded up the one-story house, which Harvey described as uninhabitable, about 6:45 a.m.
The house's sole resident was not home at the time of the fire, but Front Street Animal Shelter personnel rescued two Staffordshire bull terriers, a German Shepherd and a Doberman. Flames spread to cars in the yard but did not reach neighboring houses.
Qualified Sacramento residents can legally grow up to six plants in their homes without penalty, then face a $500-per-plant penalty for any more. Sacramento Police Department spokeswoman Linda Matthew said local law enforcement would likely pursue administrative penalties, not criminal charges, against the homeowner.
Plants were being grown both inside and outside the house, Harvey said. The fire's cause has yet to be determined, he said.
