The Sacramento City Council will vote Tuesday on a potential ballot measure that would raise taxes for recreational marijuana shops.

If approved by council, the ballot measure will be put before voters in November. The ballot measure would give city council the ability to place a business operations tax on recreational marijuana dispensaries of up to 10 percent.

Proposition 64, which would legalize recreational marijuana in California, already includes a sales tax of 15 percent. States that have already legalized recreational marijuana have state tax ranging from 12.9 percent in Colorado to 37 percent in Washington.
