In about a month California voters will decide if recreational marijuana will be legal in the state. Tuesday night in the south Valley city leaders were faced with some major decisions about how they will handle marijuana in their communities should Proposition 64 pass that would legalize the drug.

In Lemoore city leaders say they will be ready to regulate marijuana in their community if it becomes legal in the state. In nearby Hanford the pot discussion is still taking place.

In Hanford the city council chambers were full as the marijuana debate raged on. City leaders didn't take any action in addressing marijuana in Hanford with a potential large grow operation pending that could provide jobs and revenue.

Residents are speaking out against pot grows in Hanford.

"Water... Water is a huge issue here in this valley and marijuana is a very thirsty crop. It's more thirsty than cotton but cotton is a cash crop for us you can sell it overseas but marijuana is an illicit drug," said Hanford resident Michael Lamb.

Lemoore city leaders wanted to make their stance on Marijuana clear with the potential of voters legalizing the drug in November

"In advance of that the city Council passed an ordinance tonight and Lamore to regulate The recreational grows in homes," said Lemoore City Manager Andi Welsh.

Now, if Prop 64 passes to legalize marijuana, anyone who wants to grow marijuana in Lemoore will have to go through the city.

"People will need to come in and pull a building permit so we can make sure their heating and ventilation systems are up to code and if they have lighting that is installed that's up to code to make sure they are growing safely, " said Welsh.

The potential for marijuana legalization is posing many questions and challenges for municipalities across the state Lemoore leaders are happy they're now ready for whatever happens.

"We didn't want to be trying to catch up after if it passes, so knowing we have to have a process in our public hearings so we wanted to be ready and we are prepared for whatever might come," said Welsh.

In Lemoore the city's marijuana ordinances are set to go into effect on November 9th if prop 64 passes.

In Hanford city staff was directed to do more research on medical marijuana grows before a decision is made.
