KUALA LUMPUR: A taxi driver was sentenced to 10 years jail and 10 strokes of the rotan by the High Court here today for possession of 228.45gm of ganja in 2008.

Davinder Singh Malkiat Singh, 43, pleaded guilty to committing the offence in front of the Platinum Victory Condo, Melati Utama, Wangsa Maju, at about 1.40am on Nov 24, 2008.

Justice Datuk Ghazali Cha ordered the sentence to run from the date of his arrest on Nov 24, 2008.

Davinder Singh originally claimed trial to trafficking, a capital offence, but changed his plea after the charge was amended to one of possession.

The court was told that two policemen detained him in his taxi with two passengers and a search revealed a block of drug, suspected to be ganja, and a weighing machine under the driver's seat.

In mitigation, his counsel, Datuk Baljit Singh Sidhu, said he was a first offender and had repented and wanted to return to his family as soon as possible.

Deputy public prosecutor Geethan Ram Vincent said that although Davinder Singh had pleaded guilty, the court must take into account the effects of the drug on youngsters and their families.
