California Union Decides Legalizing Pot Will Create New Jobs

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union in California has endorsed Proposition 19, a voter initiative to legalize pot in the state. The union's Dan Rush, who pushed for the endorsement, says he is "expecting to garner the endorsements of most of the major unions in California over the next several weeks."

The UFCW has 26,000 members in California, and believes the production of hemp would create a lot of agricultural jobs. Hemp isn't the same as marijuana but would also be legalized if Prop 19 passes in November.

The California Labor Federation, UFCW's umbrella organization, decided to stay neutral on the issue despite heavy lobbying from pot proponents. Their neutrality, though, freed up each of the federation's 1,200 member unions to endorse the initiative and contribute to the campaign for it. UFCW has made its choice.

Snagging the UFCW's support is a major victory for Prop 19 supporters, especially coming as it did on the heels of Democratic U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein's decision this week to oppose the measure.

Typo or Mis-quote;

The UFCW has any where from 130,000 to 140,000 members in the state of California. I am sure all locals will be endorsing Prop 19.

I wished the Gov't would come out say the real reasons behind them wanting to keep a nature grown plant illegal... They allow prescripition drugs to fly off the shelves even though they are killing hundreds of thousands yearly but its ok.... They have seen billions of people die at the hands of alcohol and yet thats ok as well. And look how many have died at the hands of cigarettes and yet again thats all legal..... But yet they go after everyone and anyone who smokes or grows weed a harmful plant that has medical properties to it... There against weed but yet they allow illegal Mexicans to smuggle tons and tons of illegal weed across our borders to be sold on every street in America it makes NO SENSE. Our Federal Gov't isn't enforcing the laws and are trying to sue the states that are enforcing them... What the hell is our country coming too?????

Only if you live in oakland as that is where the jobs and the big growers will be:

Sorry but thought this would offer a little more insight.

Again I feel this prop 19 was never about legalization but the protection of one businessmans, business plan.

Oakland approves massive grows; 275k per permit ... Rich Lee Wins One
The Oakland City Council isn't waiting for November to begin jumbling the legal rules. The Council's Public Safety Committee approved licensing wholesale pot growing Tuesday, 3-to-1.

KALW News reporter Ali Winston reports from that meeting that sponsors say the main reason for the proposal isn't revenue, it's safety (as their name implies): residential electrical fires more than doubled in the city in the past three years, and officials think there's a good connection between that increase and unregulated pot "grow houses."

That said, the committee proposes that applicants pay fees of over $275,000 per operation.

Approved by the committee and full City Council, four large growers would be permitted in the first year.

One grower said he embraced regulation but argued that the plan would force medium- and small-scale cultivators to close down, move, or "go back underground into the dark ages."

The ordinance doesn't yet set a limit on the size of the large cultivators

The plan also would permit Oakland's four licensed dispensaries to sell to retailers across California.

Last month rich lee purchased a 20 acre plot to build his new growing facilities

Just to clear up some items here;

Prop 19 (the tax & regulate act) has nothing to do the the ordinance in the city of Oakland. The ordinance only applies to medical cannabis. The oridinance states there will only be (at this time) four permitted industrial grows. The ordinance would allow the industrial sized grows to sell throughout the state NOT the dispensaries. But if you think about it, the dispensaries can give meds to any state certified MM patient regardless of where they live.

So he has the money and the connections. Now he and 3 of his cronies will have the right to sell pot in CA. and everyone else has to suck it up? How can this monopoly be legal? Hell, it's better the way it is now. I must be confused. Not for the first time!
Smoke for a better tomorrow!:hookah:
