While demand for hemp foods and products is growing rapidly in Canada, it may be a tight year for hemp growers on the Prairies.

Unexpected bumper crops in the past few crops years have created an abundance in hemp supply, according to Hemp Oil Canada president Shaun Crew, which will mean a reduction in contracts this growing season.

"In terms of growth, we'll certainly see it on the organic side, but conventional will be fairly steady to even a lesser number of acres this year until we get through the surplus in seed," Crew says.

Despite a potential drop in acreage, Canadian hemp growers can look forward to a new resource in production practices for the cannabis crop. Crew says the Hemp Production Guide will be available this year.

"We're pretty excited about this," Crew says, "this will be sort of the A to Z guide for our farm producers to grow hemp, and sort of the ins and outs and 18 years of tips from the trials and tribulations the producers have gone through. So that will be put together in a nice concise booklet."

Crew says the guide will be available in hard copy and online formats.
