The Nelson Cannabis Club has celebrated a "Merry Cannabis" on the Church Steps.

The group held a small, peaceful protest at "high noon" on Saturday as part
of nationwide National Organisation for the Reform of Marijuana Laws
demonstrations.

Club member Julian Crawford said the protest was held to raise awareness of
the injustices of prohibition.

"We see cannabis prohibition as being completely unjust. Cannabis is
beneficial in many people's lives."

He said 75 percent of New Zealanders had smoked cannabis by the time they
turned 21, and prohibition simply made the majority of the population
criminals.

"By openly smoking cannabis in public like this, we are hoping that the
police and the politicians will enter the debate into improving the
situation and getting some cannabis law reform."

Mr Crawford said the group sat on the Church Steps for about an hour,
smoking cannabis and making music.

He said he had taken part in similar protests in Dunedin without trouble
from the police.

Constable Vaughan Joyce of Nelson police said on Monday there was no
trouble from the protesters and no arrests were made.
