A CANNABIS grower claimed he grew the drug to ease pain after he was shot in the leg, a court heard. Samuel Sherriff, 26, of Temple View Terrace, East End Park, Leeds, admitted producing the drug and possession of the illegal plant after his secret was uncovered in March last year.

Leeds Crown Court heard yesterday Sherriff had been shot in the leg in July, 2005, and was in hospital for eight weeks and was still in pain — even though he had been smoking cannabis since the incident.

"He started growing cannabis in January this year but the majority he grew was for his own personal use — except sometimes he gave a bag of cannabis to his family and friends when they requested," said Mehran Nassiri, prosecuting. "He never received any money from anyone for the cannabis he supplied."

The hearing was adjourned by Judge Geoffrey Marson QC for further information and Sherriff's case is expected to be resumed next week.
