Changes Could Come To AZ Medical Marijuana Law

A state lawmaker is looking to add to regulations for medical marijuana.

One bill being proposed would allow police to dispose of the medical marijuana they seize instead of keeping the drug to give back to patients.

This is just one part of the plan.

A state lawmaker is proposing two bills to tighten the state's medical marijuana program. She wants dispensaries to put warning labels on their edible products such as cookies and brownies so kids can't get their hands on them.

The other would give police the right to dispose of medical marijuana seized during criminal investigations. Police have to keep plants and drugs in case a court requires them to be returned to the patient.

Right now the bill is getting a lot of opposition from medical marijuana advocates. Voters approved the medical marijuana law in 2010.

Since then, numbers show about 34,000 Arizonans use medical marijuana for conditions like chronic pain.

Many opposed to the bills say the labeling could violate free speech and are concerned about law enforcement destroying seized marijuana.
