South America's largest medical marijuana crop growing in Chile was formally inaugurated on Tuesday, according to a Reuters report. Some 6,900 cannabis plants are growing at the pot farm in the town of Colbun, which is about 170 miles south of Santago.

The plants are intended to provide medical marijuana for approximately 4,000 patients across Chile.

Chile initially passed a medical marijuana law back in 2005, but it took a number of years to obtain necessary approval from the country's agricultural service before cultivation could begin, as reported by The Associated Press.

The project comes as attitudes toward marijuana rapidly shift and acceptance for medical marijuana gains momentum in Latin America.

"This farm will further permit people to see for themselves the reality of the plant, and what its uses are," project leader Ana Maria Guzmari told Reuters.

Unlike Uruguay, which became the first country in the world to legalize recreational marijuana cultivation, sales and consumption in 2013, Chilean authorities are only supporting medical marijuana efforts thus far.

"We don't want to get into a debate about the personal use of marijuana," Rodolfo Carter, the mayor of Santiago district La Florida, told BBC News.

"Let's stick to the medical issue. This is about providing people who are suffering from cancer with a natural, healthier and cheaper treatment for their pain," he said.
