Starting last March, chronic pain is a qualifying condition for medical cannabis in the state of New York, NBC affiliate station WHEC reports.

State Health Department officials first announced the approval of chronic pain for medical marijuana in December.

“Improving patient access to medical marijuana continues to be one of our top priorities, as it has been since the launch of the program. These key enhancements further that goal,” Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said at the time, as reported by the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Patient numbers may now see rapid growth with the addition of chronic pain to the state’s list of qualifying conditions.

As of March 15, 14,683 patients were certified for medical cannabis in New York and 897 medical practitioners had registered with the New York State Medical Marijuana Program, according to state records.

Numerous studies show marijuana can effectively treat chronic pain. Not surprisingly, chronic pain is the most commonly cited reason Americans seek out medical marijuana. A recent report released in January by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, found substantial evidence to conclude that cannabis – or cannabinoids found in the marijuana plant – can effectively treat chronic pain in a many patients.

An estimated 42-50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, according to the American Academy of Pain Medicine. It’s a complex condition that remains poorly understood and hard to control with prescription medication. A 2006 survey conducted for the American Pain Foundation found approximately 60 percent of chronic pain sufferers who used prescription opioid painkillers said they continued to experience breakthrough pain at least once a day, severely impacting quality of life and overall wellbeing.
