Whether it's legalizing marijuana (also known as cannabis) for recreational use or for medical purposes, the substance has always caused controversy. Over the years, a number of states have decriminalized it to varying degrees, while others have remained legally opposed.
Thanks to a Phoenix-based company, for states that are allowing access to the drug, things might have gotten a little easier. Endexx Corporation has been dreaming up a new product that would allow recreational consumers access to the drug with the touch of a button without the need for a clerk.
The company it envisions transactions where "customers will use an app on an iPhone to purchase an ounce of weed, go to a retail outlet to pick it up and then use a touch screen vending machine to completed the order."
CEO Todd Davis, Endexx, said it's all about ease of use. "The way we see it, when you walk into a shop you don't need the expert or aficionado to help with selection," said Davis. "The people who are using this in the recreational space — they know what they want and they don't want to hear the whole spiel every time."
Endexx is not the first company to try its hand at marijuana vending machines. Competitors such as Medbox and CannCann have also created ways of doling out the proper amount of medication based off of a patient's prescription.
"Some people want to see this free-flowing marijuana," said Bedrick, CEO of Medbox. "They want to go from federal and state ban to marijuana for everybody. We don't believe that can happen. In order to gain respect and trust, it's better to go through gradual, medical adoption."
Residents in Colorado can expect to see vending machines offering recreational sale of marijuana as early as January 2014, with the state of Washington expected to follow shortly after.
