Springfield, Massachusetts city officials are negotiating with a company that wants to open the first medical marijuana treatment center in the city.

Hampden Care Facility Inc. was picked from six bidders who submitted proposals for a medical marijuana dispensary in Springfield. The Chicopee-based company and the city are negotiating a host community agreement that must be approved by Mayor Domenic Sarno.

" Getting to crossing the 't's' and dotting the 'i's' of how exactly that dispensary retail front would run," Sarno said in explaining the review process he set up.

The proposed address of the medical marijuana center has not been made public. The company would also need a special permit from the city council and a license from the state health department before it could open the dispensary.

The only medical marijuana clinic in western Massachusetts opened last September in Northampton.
