Could Medical Marijuana Become Legal In Indiana?

A northwest Indiana state senator will try again to legalize medical marijuana, but acknowledges she's not expecting to get far.

Portage Democrat Karen Tallian says she'd prefer to join the states which have decriminalized marijuana across the board, but argues the medicinal uses of the drug are well-documented enough to allow it on a doctor's recommendation. And she contends there's no evidence that marijuana is a public health threat.

But Tallian predicts opposition from Senate leaders and Governor Pence will snuff out this bill without a hearing.

A bipartisan study committee did open the door a tiny bit to medical use of marijuana and its derivatives, recommending that children with epilepsy be allowed to take part in clinical trials of hemp oil as a preventative for seizures. But prosecutors oppose that bill as well, warning it would complicate criminal cases against recreational users.
