The Dexter Village Council unanimously voted to hold a public hearing to discuss a proposed ordinance amendment for medical marijuana home occupations at its meeting Monday.

The public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. June 27 at the Dexter Senior Center. Council is proposing penalties for medical marijuana home occupations, in which violators could be fined $1,000 for a first offense, $2,000 as a first-time repeat offender and $3,000 upon each subsequent offense.

Violators are considered to be anyone storing medical marijuana in their home that is not in accordance with the guidelines established in the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, which allows qualified patients to cultivate or possess marijuana in a single dwelling household provided it is not sold, shared or exchanged.

The village's current moratorium on medical marijuana expires on July 19.
