Welcome all. This is a regrouping effort post-retreat, sorta. I had some God's Gift and others set up in DWC but lost my nerve over potential reservoir temps. Not willing to run a cooler so when some family business and health emergencies ensued I took the signal and took down the grow. I either replanted in peat, or took cuttings, rooted them out, then had everyone in a sort of stasis mode for a month while I sorted things out. It's my first completely personal indoor grow and first proper grow in 20 years - I didn't want to biff it!

I hope you'll pardon this placeholder, but brief intro pics will ensue and then we'll get on with the grow, talk about what's brewing, how it's brewing, and plans going forward.

Hey RD!

I made it over and I'm looking forward to being along for the ride! I do tend to wonder away from time to time.

What kind of temps were you getting again? There’s different ways of attacking a high res problem- but it depends on the temp. I've grown some out before that had a res temp of over 25C (and higher I think) before I got my chiller.
If it's soup type of hot, you may want to forgo using bennies and use food grade h202. Under 25C, spend more on bennies (and I think your in Canada?), I've had fun trying many different types of bennies on the Canadian market in search for a good replacement for hydroguard.
If you've got the coin- I'd try Microbial Mass. Stuff works wonders and has some great bacterium in it. So far that's been my favorite for my budget.

Got deep pockets and want insane roots? Orca paired with Mycos Chum.

A more budget friendly one: Green Planet Root Builder.

I saw in your other journal you mentioned growing some bennies using the bottle stuff as stock. This really caught my eye, as its something I've been toying with in the background....what do you use to feed your microbes?

Needless to say, all your tinkering has really piqued my interest!

well, ok a little pussy footing around... for completist's sake, I'm gonna quick fast intro my grow space and tools. Y'all who've seen it just skip the entry (hey, I'm proud of my infrastructure!).

OK folks these are the items I feel are necc, as well as two smoke/heat detectors, in order to protect against fire. I have been trained quite extensively, year after year, in fighting fire onboard ship/boat fires by the Canadian Navy in their "live fire" simulators. I've experience fighting actual vessel fires as a Search and Rescue tech. and Cdn Coast Guard Reserve, and two serious fires in my own home. IN ALL cases the fire blanket is my favourite tool. Large woolen blankets work esp. well and can be wetted but will be scorching hot again to pick up. Consider that your insurance company will likely deny your claim if you are growing weed on-premises. Consider also that no human, courageous or not, can fight household-type fires with all their thick toxic black smoke for more than 10-15 seconds before needing fresh air, or passing out.

You need two extinguishers, not the small teeny ones either. I have two 20lb. One should apply to electrical fires at least. Consider also a headlamp. Use these (below) to mark locations of equip. I also rec. upgrading all extent cords to 14 gauge, 15 amp. Long past time to start 'adulting' for some of us. I'm bothering with this because I care about you mooks. Let's protect ourselves, our loved ones and our right to continue growing in recently legalized locales by showing we can be trusted to protect our neighbours too in apartment buildings etc. Nuff said.

 Bis  Ass  Fire  Extinguisher is mandatory now in all grow rooms.
Managed to live through 2 house fires myself, don't need a third either.
Lights went out immediately and there isn't anything to prepare you for the thick smoke that followed.
Crawling around in the dark trying to figure out how to escape isn't something I'd want to do again.
I hope everyone has enough sense to be prepared as you are.

Hey everybody, I’m this journal I’m going to underline any questions I have for those able to help this should make it easier. Feedback welcomed.

I’ll try to keep this grow room setup description succinct as possible bc some is covered elsewhere, however, I benefit a lot when others include such info so I’ll start every journal with such an overview. Jog on if not interested.

So while I do have a seperate room recently renovated to perform as a grow lab of sorts for both cannabis and fungi, it’s shelves are so loaded I’m keeping these items in the grow area.

I’ve got sprayers for all situations. A fave is a peppermint soap mix I use to spray plants in the immediate vicinity of fertilizer filling ports on my SIPs right after refilling, just in case I splashed some ferts on the plant. I highly recommend. I have a strong LiquiDirt mix in one, this is a foliar for me and also the base element for my custom, cultured microbe recharge applied to reservoir every week. Hydroguard is in another, the sprayer having been blacked-out since pic. I add this to foliar mix or foliar alone as pest control- the bacteria species was found to kill mites and other pests on contact. Another has a DIY calcium foliar w/magnesium created KNF-style (Korean Natural Farming) Yet another is simply distilled water. Also a weak fert mix for seedling soil and roots, another sprayer has some LABs mixed with cultured microbes from my local enviro that are mixed as experimental anti fungal. I also keep a sprayer loaded with 70% Isopropyl alcohol, and another with H2o2.

Check out LiquiDirt, google the stuff, it’s my favourite single bio booster and most important base element of my weekly microbe recharge. It replaced B vitamin type product for me.

Be careful with that GH Diamond Liquid, it is a powerful chelator that I reckon requires reduction of nutes by 25% minimum if using as directed. Can add to foliar spray also. I spray to develop my roots, just like root drench is for the leaves and branches, feeding leaves grows roots.

When I abandoned my DWC grow it was hard knowing a was delaying the day I’d finally get some smoke but not too bad.

@Rexer my temps only got to 71f, but summer heat was yet to arrive and my air con doesn’t impact that room much without relocating. To mitigate I used ex large reservoir and installed a computer fan over a plant site hole to do like aquarium evap cooling (thus also the 27 gal res). I might have been fine, oh and I have Hydroguard, but did not feel the time, first grow, that to chance it was right…. and some major personal, family health and financial crisis entered picture suddenly at same time. So I went for the ultimate, but arcane, low maint method. Let’s talk about it again later, thank you for your interest and info, I look forward to discussing.


The first 5x5 was erected in a 10x5 space. This room/tent is setup for co2 enrichment, from two sources, one is a straightforward 20lb tank/reg/controller setup, the other are pails of fermenting fruits, later to become wine, in otherwise airtight containers with a airline running inside tent capped w/ bubbler vents or one-way filters.

I’m also venting my KNF fermenting fertilizers into the tent all to support the bottled system which will last much longer when co2 is already 800ppm up from 400.

You can see in pic how awkward the setup is. You’re looking through a doorway, half is entrance to tent, half into lungroom, and there’s a step down by 4’ that makes things pretty really damned awkward (f#<¥ing dangerous).

Each tent has automated HVAC and the same 1000w Kingbrite bar light. The Burn Unit here however is the only one to have a co2 setup, that’s what the green Inkbird is, a controller for a 20lb bottle. I’ve managed to go from 400ppm to 800 by just venting co2 from fermenting grapes (wine) and fermenting bamboo fertilizers (controller also makes for a basic monitor) You don’t get many features with the Inkbird b/c it’s quite basic but at time of purchase the next level up was $400-500 and I didn’t want to pay that, this unit cost $200-$225. A regulator is another. C note and the tank was used but still another $100, filled.

Oh fer foxsakes, is it nice to have a tent with access that doesn’t make you feel like you’re on a Kazakhstanian space station.

We’re all SIPs in here too with an addition to test against the other design. Here the plastics are mostly the same however a 10 gallon Geopot for each plant has been placed in the totes on top of the wicking foot. Don’t worry, design pics are coming if you’re new to SIPs or curious about my execution, because there are some unique features here.

Plants in the back are part of the Mom patrol (that’s Karen on far left. Beside her is Karen. The yellow BS is Karen and the smaller greenie is named Karen). in this pic two Gorrilla Glue #4 (bushy af) on left, two banana sundae on the right. The BS were yanked from my garden on the day when 12 hrs seperated sunset and sunrise, to keep them from flowering. They had been expected to expire when rudely dropped in small depression in the veg bed a month ago. Thankfully the day is still young, and they could still meet their maker any moment. Actually, these two have some potential so it’s Mom Patrol for them, and back upstairs to the attic along with the 2 gg4, where they’ll join two God’s Gift (more white middle class suburbanites more indica hybrids)

So here we are, 3 days ago, in “The Palazzio”, a made-up word for the slightly newer, easy-access 5x5. The one where the SIP totes have soft pots instead of just 'cloth long underwear' like in the other SIPs in The Burn Unit. The plants sitting in the back on the aluminum scaffold bench will change in the pics as they are moms, so don’t get attached, we’re gonna focus on the SIP plants, which, handily have been labelled for you.

OG Ultraviolet is a stumpy, thick but short-limbed, 80% Indica cross between Face Off OG and Purple Indica, a popular “Pacific NW” strain (Washington State claims it, we'll let'm have it... but 'some say' it's really from the Pacific SW, AKA The Wet Coast, AKA frikken heaven on earth. C'mon, Canada people. PS Some People are wrong) Anyway, I'm a sucker for local weed.

Runtz. One of 2020's big sellers. Even the stalks of seedlings smell like candy. Another WASPY suburbanite Indica hybrid designed to fouck you up, bad. Narcotic. Bring it.

Diatribe Alert

I've lived almost my entire adult life in Canada's Green Triangle, and when I wasn't there I was in The Netherlands so it wasn't as though weed was missing from the culture. However, I have only smoked a few times over a 3-4 day period since I came back from Europe... in 2012! I came back because my health was extremely poor, Some days I was so dizzy I couldn't stand at all. The flight(s) home just about ended me. Whenever I fly I can never remember the 3 days afterward, but the stories don't sound good. For reals. Since 2005 I'd been treated for MS, an MS diagnosis often takes years and immediate treatment is important so... however, we couldn't find enough sclerosis to pound the last nail home. Well, turns out, 4 years ago it was discovered to be major issues with my inner ear, the system that tells your brain where down and up are. It's bad, really bad. I have had bad migraines since childhood. Sometimes they are so bad... you just know you're not gonna be the same after this one, and the Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist tells me he has seen this in people who get uber-migraines, next-level types, which I get and for the last few years they have lasted 2-5 days at a time. Anyway, that's the diagnosis. Usually, I just have to be sedated when these events take place because eventually I just want to jump out a window. You would too, trust me. I have ridiculously high pain tolerance, can and have dealt with major injuries in the mountains etc., and got myself out but this is another thing. Anyway, he says those migraines have caused trauma to both inner ear systems. I'm completely deaf in one ear and now expected to lose the other. I have lost both before and one came back, it was terrifying. Very lonely. Anyway, gotta learn to sign apparently. Yeah but who am I gonna 'talk' to? Anyway, one of my immed. issues is that I get a kind of 'insta-vertigo' I call it. I'm feeling normal, then a split second later I am as dizzy as you've ever been, like put your arms out spin around in place 20 times as fast as you can then, stop. That's how dizzy, but suddenly, instantly, without warning. So, I fall down. More like throw myself across the room because my brain thinks left is down and up is right. I've had two broken bones requiring surgical repair, and I'm afraid to count the concussions. Stitches, knocked unconscious.... on and bloody on. In someone whose professional life used to be guiding people through hazardous environments, climbing guide, caving, kayak, boats, yachts, etc., aaaaarrrrggghh. I used to be so proud never to get sea sick regardless conditions or length of time. Now I'm seasick laying in bed. All. the. time. It takes two hours of laying still in bed to recover from the nausea caused by 15 minutes of 'normal activity' like watering the garden (outside) I've been doing physio for years on this, before diagnosis, way before because I thought it just might be the problem. You try to reprogram your brain but it is not very effective for people over 30 and I'm in my 40's. I still do it every day, it might save me a broken arm here and there, or worse.

Okay so that's out of my system. It's just such an impediment that it affects everything so I feel the need to share or otherwise people will make their own conclusions, it's only natural. Thank you for letting me get that out. Its why I hesitate to journal because I may, no doubt will, at some point have to stop for a while. It's a lot more work than just sniping from the peanut gallery. Now that, that I shall do until my dying day, you may be assured.

Giving you a quick comparison of my two 5x5’s. The Burn Unit above is running DIY self irrigated planters also. I will do a ‘just the facts’ entry for everything, but first I have to reel you in to follow this journal with pictures! Obvious diff. are these are filled with matrix, not seperated with soft pots. I do mean to grow 2 plants in each sometimes, the planters in this formation hold 17 gal ‘soil’. The one on left has plastic separator to prevent competition, right side does not. Plants are Skittles and pic is 10 days old.

And this is the ‘Palazzio’. Same footprints, gear-wise almost a copy sans co2. No more than 10 days old. Running Sub Irrigated Planters also w/ some blue led shop lights in there because my Kingbrite 1kw lights are 3200 kelvin (very reddish, flower tailored)

Week’s growth Runtz…

Both topped at node 5, bottoms still intact. However, as a seedling until today this plant’s vigour is way greater than rest of tent. Even though I germ under bright light to keep stretch down, this thing went nuts. Soooo, I’ve put an an S curve into main stem with a 90 degree clip to even out height. This signaled a side shoot from node 3 to come up and compete with fresh node 4 new tops to create this “Tricera-Tops”

The nitrogen take up on all four was a bit scary, didn’t know if they’d stop before becoming black, but today they’ve finally checked. I’ve found a hopper, leaf miner evidence and fung-flies up my arse. Oh crap, these comparisons might even be under a week. Standby…
