A DJ was caught bringing €4,000 of cannabis into Dublin Airport up his sleeve, it has been alleged.

Thomas Buckley (34) was arrested and charged with a drugs offence after he was stopped by customs officers in the airport.

He had arrived on a flight from Spain at the time of the incident earlier this year, a court was told.

The case was adjourned when Mr Buckley appeared before Dublin District Court.

The accused, of Knockaverry, Youghal, Co Cork, is charged with possession of cannabis with intent to sell or supply.

A garda sergeant told Judge Fiona Lydon that the DPP had directed summary disposal of the case at district court level.

Stuffed

Outlining the allegations, the sergeant said the accused arrived at Terminal 1 at Dublin Airport at 1pm on February 14.

The flight was from Barcelona, where he had been working as a DJ, the court heard.

He was stopped by a customs officer and cannabis with an estimated value of €4,000 was found stuffed into a jacket sleeve, it was alleged.

According to the prosecution, the accused said he had the cannabis for medical reasons.

The judge accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case.

This means it can be heard in the district court instead of being sent to Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, which has tougher potential sentencing powers on conviction.

The judge adjourned the case to a date in October.

The defendant, who has not yet indicated how he intends to plead to the charge, did not address the court during the brief hearing.

He was remanded on continuing bail.
