PHUKET, - Drugs trade have recently re-emerged in Thailand's southern region, and state authorites are keeping a close watch on large narcotics rings, according to a government source.

The source from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) told TNA yesterday that new traders of drugs had smuggled narcotics into southern areas from the country's northern region.

"Some foreign tourists visiting the country's tourist sites in the South, including Phuket, Phang-nga and Krabi Provinces, have also involved in illegal drugs trade, especially (EDIT) and marijuana", said the source.

"Anti-narcotics officials and related agencies are closely monitoring movements of large-scaled drugs rings being active in the region, and offensive measures supported by in-dept intelligence tactics will be used to suppress them", the source disclosed.

However, the source said, (EDIT) were rarely found in the region now.

Meanwhile, Deputy Governor of Phuket Province told TNA that most of the drugs rings re-emerging in the region are small-scaled ones which had smuggled the drugs, mostly (EDIT), from neighbouring countries.

Local authorities had, therefore, strictly inspected places where drugs were expected to be used, like entertainment venues, he said. (TNA)--E002*
