Early budding

I have several clones all of which are indica crossed with sativa. I live in southern California and I am growing outdoors. My clones are 4 weeks old and are looking very healthy, getting direct light from 830 am to 6pm. Unfortunately they have begun to flower, I don't want this happened so quick. Can anyone think of why this is happening? Is it because I started from a clone? Most importantly, will the plants revert back to a strong vegetative cycle as the light over head becomes even more intense or should I call it quits with the veg cycle and switch to a blooming fert? The only thing I can think is that I started too early in the year? Any advice would be appreciated

i'm not an outdoor gardener, and i am sure you will get a better answer than this.... but.... i think you hit the nail on the head with the "too early" thing.

i just checked the sunrise and sunset times for L.A. this time of year.

----- as you can see, the days are only barely over 13 hours long right now..... in a couple weeks, the days are 14-15 hours long and getting even longer as the middle of summer comes around. so.... my advice would be to bring them back in (if you can) and put them under artificial light, or just wait it out.... if they are truly in "flower mode" now, they should revert back to veg in a couple weeks when the days are longer. not the best thing to play with their hormones like that..... but thats my take on your situation.

as i said.... a "dirt pro" will probably come along in a minute and just blow us both away with some crazy cool info though :welcome:

I am in the same boat and am very curious about what kind of answers you get. If they wont revert to veg, then I want to replace them.

oh they WILL revert back to veg..... there is no doubt about that. my reference to the "messing with hormones" was directed toward the theory that if a plant is switched back and forth between grow stages it MAY be more apt to becoming a hermaphrodite. as an indoor grower, this can be of HUGE concern. i would imagine that growing outdoors, due to the open air, and the sheer size of the plant, some seeds are usually expected.

Thanks Bubble. I will keep an eye on them. If they start to go hermie, I will get rid of them. I have a few others I would rather they did not pollinate. :)

Yeah, they'll go back to veg. You can actually harvest those spring bud, leaving the main fan leaves to help the plant reveg, for some early season smoke.

Don't feed them bloom nutes now under any circumstances. When they switch back to veg hit them with a diluted manure tea to give them a boost along. I prefer composted steer manure, but everyone has their faves.

Keep a close eye on them come mid July/mid August. If they're going to be actual hermies this is when it is going to happen.

This out too early budding problem used to be a very common occurrence in the late 70's when people were trying to adapt long maturing Colombian sativas to a shorter growing season and switching to sinsemilla cultivation. They'd start 'em indoors in February, put 'em outside in early-mid April and see colitas popping out all over the place that first month.

Don't sweat it. This plant is a weed. It's programmed to grow anywhere conditions will let it. Tough lil' bassards, they are.

firestone: good comments, I'm just about to harvest my spring buds and let mine go into veg again.

to the OP: the reason yours is flowering is because it isn't getting more than 12 hours of sun. I'm sure it's back in veg now, since mine is just starting to veg again, too and I'm not far from you.

as far as nutes, I would suggest just water, at this point. flush it, pull the buds and let it flower. go back to veg nutes in a couple weeks, up to a month. wait for it to get it's full new blades back. once it can harvest enough energy, it'll want more nutes.
